Yesterday health workers across Lombardia went on strike, with protests in the streets of Milan that resulted in scuffles with the police.
The moments of tension came as police attempted to curtail the right to demonstration violently, impeding the marchers access to the regional government building. However workers and patients (recently evicted from a popular occupation at Milan's State University) drew their own batons and forced the police forces to withdraw, reaching their desired endpoint for the march.
The trigger of the protests was the firing of 244 workers at San Rafaele Hospital, however the shadow of further cuts and redundancies looms over the public healthcare in all Italy.
